Your winter flu vaccine: everything you need to know
Who should get it, when to get it, and why the flu jab is one of the simplest things you can do to protect yourself and your family this winter.

Every winter, flu circulates widely across Ireland, and for some people it can be genuinely serious. The good news is that a quick, simple vaccine offers strong protection, and you can get yours right here at the pharmacy, often without an appointment. Here is everything you need to know before the season sets in.
Why the flu vaccine matters
Flu is far more than a heavy cold. It can lead to complications like chest infections and bronchitis, and it hits older adults, young children and people with long-term conditions the hardest. Getting vaccinated reduces your chance of catching flu and, if you do get it, tends to make it much milder. Just as importantly, it helps protect the more vulnerable people around you, from a new baby to an elderly parent.
Who should get it
The flu vaccine is recommended for most adults, and it is especially important if you:
- Are aged 65 or over
- Have a long-term health condition such as diabetes, asthma, heart or kidney disease
- Are pregnant, at any stage of pregnancy
- Are a carer, or live with someone who is at higher risk
- Work in healthcare or a caring role
If you fall into an HSE at-risk group, the flu vaccine is usually free of charge. Not sure whether that includes you? Just ask us and we will check in a moment.
When is the best time to get it
Aim for the autumn, before flu really starts circulating, so your body has time to build up protection. That said, it is never too late in the season. If you have not had yours by December or January, it is still well worth getting.
A flu vaccine takes a few minutes, but the protection lasts the whole season. It is one of the easiest wins for your health all year.
What to expect on the day
The whole thing is quick and comfortable. Our trained pharmacist will confirm you are suitable, answer any questions, and give the vaccine into your upper arm. You can walk in whenever it suits, or book a time in advance. Most people are in and out within a few minutes and carry on with their day as normal.
