Getting your family through cold and flu season

When cold and flu season arrives, it often feels like it moves through the whole house one by one. Most winter bugs are unpleasant but harmless, and can be managed comfortably at home. Here is how to look after your family, and how to know when something needs more attention.

Easing the symptoms

You cannot cure a cold, but you can absolutely make it more bearable. The basics still work best:

  • Rest and plenty of fluids, more than you think
  • Paracetamol or ibuprofen for aches, fever and a sore throat, at the right dose for age
  • Simple remedies like honey and lemon for a cough, for anyone over one year old
  • Saline drops or sprays to ease a blocked nose, which are gentle enough for babies
Careful with childrens doses

Always use the dose and product suited to your child's age and weight, and never double up on medicines that contain the same ingredient. If you are unsure, ask us and we will check it with you.

Helping it pass sooner

  • Keep everyone hydrated and well rested
  • Keep rooms comfortable, not too hot or dry
  • Wash hands often to stop it spreading around the house
  • Consider a flu vaccine for the family before the season peaks

When to seek more help

Trust your instincts, and come to us or your GP if:

  • A fever is very high or will not settle
  • Symptoms last longer than expected or suddenly get worse
  • There is difficulty breathing, or a rash that does not fade under pressure
  • A baby or young child is very unwell, feeding poorly or unusually drowsy
Most winter bugs just need rest, fluids and a little comfort. But you know your child best. If something does not feel right, come and talk to us.
