Needing emergency contraception is far more common than people think, and there is absolutely nothing to feel awkward about. We provide it discreetly, without judgement, and often free of charge. Here are the questions we hear most, answered plainly.
Do I need an appointment or a prescription?
No to both. You can walk in any time during opening hours. Just ask to speak with the pharmacist, and we will see you in private as soon as we can. There is no need to explain anything at the counter.
How soon should I take it?
As soon as possible. Emergency contraception works best the sooner it is taken after unprotected sex, so please do not put off coming in. The options available can work for a few days afterwards, but earlier is always more effective.
You may be eligible for free supply under the HSE Free Contraception Scheme. We will let you know quietly when you come in, with no fuss.
What actually happens
It is quick and completely confidential:
- You ask to speak with the pharmacist
- We have a short, private consultation in our consultation room
- If it is suitable for you, it is supplied there and then
- We offer honest advice on ongoing contraception, only if you want it
